Practical homeowner guidance for understanding the parts, noticing changes and planning seasonal maintenance in Michigan.

THE PARTS & THEIR PURPOSE

Start at the top.

A chimney is a connected system. Understanding the names makes it easier to discuss the right repair.

01 / THE CAP

The hood over the opening

A cap sits above the flue and may include screening. It helps reduce direct rain, debris and animal entry. It must leave appropriate room for exhaust and fit the actual venting system.

02 / THE CROWN

The water-shedding top

On a masonry chimney, the crown surrounds the flue at the top of the stack. Its shape and condition help direct water away from the masonry. A cap and crown do not replace one another.

03 / THE MASONRY

The exposed structure

Brick and mortar face sun, moisture and changing temperatures. Missing joints, flaking surfaces or loose material deserve assessment rather than a cosmetic cover-up.

04 / THE FLASHING

The roof connection

Flashing manages the junction where the chimney passes through the roof. A leak at this area may need roofing work, not a new cap. Finding the entry point matters.

Your seasonal checklist

Before the first fire

Arrange an annual inspection and any recommended cleaning. Review the appliance instructions, prior findings and completed repairs. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms according to their instructions.

After heavy weather

From a safe position on the ground, look for fallen masonry, a shifted cap or a new stain. Record when a leak appears. Do not climb onto the roof to investigate or to fill out our estimate form.

When something changes

Stop using a fireplace that develops smoke spillage, unusual performance or suspected damage and arrange evaluation. For immediate danger, a suspected fire or a carbon monoxide alarm, leave the home and call 911.

Before choosing a contractor or a repair

Ask what the inspection includes, whether a camera will be used, which product is proposed and what the warranty covers. Request a written scope and final total. Verify any claimed credentials independently and keep your service records.
